How ARMOCOS Approaches Archaeological Problems

The approaches that are used by Archaeological Modeling Consultants, Inc. to solve archaeological problems vary with regard to the particular problem.  Each archaeological problem is treated uniquely by ARMOCOS, and this is because the factors involved in the formation of the archaeological record are dependent on the particular social and physical contexts of the case study.  The social and physical contexts of the study area in question can be gleaned from previous archaeological research in the study area.  With this information we design algorithms that can solve your problem.

Based on available archaeological data, we begin solving problems by exploring possible patterns of continuity and utilizing statistical modeling and evolutionary computing techniques to predict areas with increased social activities. In all stages of analysis, visual displays of information and results of modeling analysis are generated which provide the archeologist or cultural resource manager with a basis for postulating hypotheses and assessing the fit or predictive ability of the models.

A common problem in archaeology is where to focus reconnaissance efforts to locate sites or indeed where to excavate once a site has been located.  Provided some initial archaeological data, such as the data points representing site locations below,

state-of-the-art statistical techniques can be utilized to determine the highest probable areas for locating archaeological remains.  These regions can be represented either by contour maps or 3-D plots where the colors or heights, respectively, denote the probabilities of locating archaeological remains:

Moreover, ARMOCOS can compute time frames for survey completion, thereby enhancing proposed cost estimates.  The results of the analyses can be used to increase the productivity of CRM firms by providing CRM firms with the information required to make decisions regarding project expenses including job assignment and man hours required to complete surveys.  Similarly, the results of the analyses can facilitate engineering companies and government agencies in deciding who in the CRM community is appropriate for carrying out the archaeological surveys.
